My “Support” Page has been updated and my fundraising campaign is ready to go! I am super nervous and excited to see how this goes. I truly hope my expectations are blown out of the water and I have plenty of funds left over to start a “Future Midwife Scholarship” (creative name ideas for the scholarship are welcome). This dream is not for me; it is for the families that deserve to have access to midwifery care.

Birth Photography Special – Summer 2013 –
I am so excited to announce I have a new photography partner in crime and we have a special deal just for mammas due this Spring and Summer!
2 birth photographers for less than the price of one!
What is “the price”?
The price for BOTH photographers to attend your birth will be $225.
Birth photographers in the DFW area charge on average $600 per client and some are upwards of $1000
Why so cheap?
We prefer the term affordable rather than cheap. This is a new partnership so we have a system to work out and portfolios to build so we truly appreciate clients who are willing to work with us as we get off the ground. We promise just because our price is reduced we put in the same amount of work and effort all of our full price clients receive. We hope to reach clients that would not be able to afford a full priced birth photographer.
Why 2 photographers?
We formed this “alliance” because we both bring something valuable to the table.
I (Kelsey) have experience in the birth field as a doula and birth instructor. I am proud of my artistic ability and was a photographer for several years, but am a bit rusty on all the latest technology.
Bailey is a more experienced photographer with a great eye and west coast style. She is more technically inclined and has the equipment to back it up. She is also a lighting guru, which tends to be the hardest aspect when it comes to labor and birth photography.
Together we are everything you need to capture the irreplaceable moments of birth.
Having 2 birth photographers on call also reduces the likely hood of the photographer missing your birth
What kind of images will you capture?
Anything you want! Some clients want us there from the moment labor starts and other prefer us to wait outside until right before baby arrives.
You can see my photography archives here.
Bailey’s portfolio includes maternity and newborn photography as well.
What if I don’t want 2 extra people in the room while I birth?
We completely understand and respect your privacy. Birth is a very intimate time and we do not want to disturb your environment. If you prefer one photographer we would discount the price even further to $175. Which ever of us was on call first when your labor begins would be the one to attend.
What happens after the birth?
We typically stay about 1 hour after the birth to capture the first family moments. We would then put together a sneak peek for you available to view within 1 week of your birth. We would then put all of your proofs online in a protected gallery. You can choose from there to order prints or digital copies.
Please contact us with any additional questions you have. We look forward to working with your family during this life changing journey!

Oh Those Lovely “Mommy Wars”
The following Facebook status was written this morning by NaturallyBorn, an online community of moms and dads looking for and giving support to others. Of course when it comes to parenting boards there are bound to be disagreements. Giving your opinion on how you raise your child(ren) is one thing but flat-out bashing another parent who is doing their best is uncalled for.
The term “Mommy Wars” used to be reserved for Stay at Home vs Working Moms, but now it seems EVERYTHING a parent does is under the microscope. In today’s society parents tend to think,”if you aren’t doing something MY way….you’re wrong”. We are supposed to be the example for our kids, not the ones who teach them how to judge and attack others. You can be passionate about your parenting methods without disrespecting others choices.
Please follow NaturallyBorn’s hint and stay out of the conversations if you have nothing nice to say!

What is Freedom for Birth? This powerful excerpt from freedomforbirth.com tells just a little bit about this worldwide revolution.
- “Freedom for Birth” is more than just a film. It marks the beginning of a movement that will focus global attention on the violations of women’s rights during childbirth all around the world.
- All women should have the right, protected by law, to decide where and how they give birth.
- The problem is that the rise of a dominant obstetric “machine” is robbing women of this right.
- The result is that many women are being subjected to medical interventions and c-sections they neither want or need.
- Tragically, midwives, the very guardians of normal birth, are being persecuted and criminally prosecuted to the extent that some have even been imprisoned.
- “Freedom for Birth” will highlight the human rights abuses happening right now in North America, Europe, Australia and beyond.
- And, the film will offer up a solution that can help protect womens’ rights
- And that solution involves you!

A short and to the point article about the rallies being held tomorrow!
Even if you can’t join in tomorrow, this website is one you must check out if you have even the slightest interest in child-birth rights for women.
The Largest Women’s Rights Movement in Decades
A monumental uprising is on the horizon. Thousands of men, women and children will gather on September 3rd. The rallies are being hosted in over 100 major cities, coast to coast, for Improving Birth’s “National Rally for Change on Labor Day”. Thanks to the intricate nature of social media, ImprovingBirth.org has been able to organize a massive movement to bring awareness to the lack of evidence-based maternity care in the US. With supporters like talk show host Ricki Lake, super model Christy Turlington tweeting about the event, and sponsors such as “InternationalCesareanAwarenessNetwork” and the “AmericanAssociationofBirthCenters,” this is sure to be an impactful event.
Much of scientific evidence takes an average of 20 to 30 years to become standard practice in our maternity care system; this is an unacceptable time table especially when talking about the well being of mothers and babies. Until we get it right, we are needlessly subjecting mothers and babies to major abdominal surgery, the long term side effects that go along with that and the unnecessary risk of death for both.
“Despite the dire situation, this is not a protest,” says Dawn Thompson, founder of ImprovingBirth. “It is a public awareness campaign to bring attention to the outdated practices that have been proven time and again to not be what is best for mothers and babies.”
Ina May Gaskin, Midwife and Right Livelihood Award winner, says “We need medical practice standards at both the federal and the state level that would address C-sections performed without medical justification and assure more mother-friendly births and fewer medical interventions during labor.” This is just one of the six steps Gaskin believes to be essential in obtaining better maternal healthcare.
Improving Birth was founded with the vision of encouraging hospital administrators to review their birth-specific policies and procedures. We ask that they implement incentive programs for doctors and nurses to get up-to-date information and education about the most current care practices. The U.S. outspends every country in the world for maternity care, and yet we rank #49 for maternal mortality rates. In fact, Amnesty International reports that “women in the US face a greater risk of maternal death than nearly all European countries, as well as Canada and several countries in Asia and the Middle East.”
We Can Do Better.
